TODL’s membership department frequently speaks with A&D firms using TODL. Our most recent conversation was with senior designer, Paul Black of Krehbiel Architecture, about their success and the interesting projects they have completed and are working on.

Designers at Krehbiel Architecture seek to create surprises and make spaces unique, yet take a practical approach to design to assure spaces are useful and not just interesting.

The firm is not only succeeding in this economy, but expanding as they add more exciting projects to their plate. They just completed a boutique hotel in Georgia and are working on several other specialty hotels, restaurants and other projects.

Paul relates that he and his designers use TODL to find unique products that trigger the emotions they are trying to convey with the spaces they design. TODL has been used to find core products and unique items from lighting to accessories.

He continues to say, they do not have a physical product library beyond samples, as they are able to use TODL and the Internet for most of their sourcing and specification. Paul stated, every designer in the office uses TODL and we keep the weekly product emails for inspiration and frequently discuss the products they see.

When you speak to Paul, his passion and expression for great design is evident.

In the boutique hotels, Paul stated that they were able to incorporate unexpected elements and create spaces that were “cutting edge” yet “comfortable” as described by guests who were surveyed. In one of their recent projects for Lodgeworks, they were able to mix eclectic pieces with a modern theme to create a wow factor that resonated with guests.

One of the new projects the firm is working on is a 17-story hotel in Charlotte, NC that will create unique spaces for business guests. Paul said they are going to incorporate elements from the region and continue to push the envelope for design that provides positive emotional triggers, is sensitive to elements that can be sustainable and also utilizes material economically by using products that provide a good value.
